Bible Verses About Strength
The Bible teaches that real strength comes from God, especially when we feel weakest. Isaiah 41:10 promises that God will strengthen and uphold us, 2 Corinthians 12:9 says his power is made perfect in weakness, and Philippians 4:13 says we can face anything through Christ who gives us strength.
Scripture is full of people who did not feel strong: shepherds, widows, prophets who wanted to quit. Their strength came from leaning on God, not from having it all together. These verses are for the moments you feel stretched thin.
When you feel weak
Weakness is not the opposite of faith. Paul found that his weakest moments were where God's strength showed up most clearly. If you are running on empty, these verses are a good place to rest.
Do not fear, for I am with you; do not be afraid, for I am your God. I will strengthen you; I will surely help you; I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.
Isaiah 41:10 (BSB)
But He said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for My power is perfected in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly in my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest on me. That is why, for the sake of Christ, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.
2 Corinthians 12:9-10 (BSB)
He gives power to the faint and increases the strength of the weak. Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall. But those who wait upon the Lord will renew their strength; they will mount up with wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not faint.
Isaiah 40:29-31 (BSB)
I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength.
Philippians 4:13 (BSB)
My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.
Psalm 73:26 (BSB)
Strength for hard days
The psalms were written by people under real pressure, and they keep calling God a rock, a fortress and a refuge. These are pictures of somewhere solid to stand. Read them aloud if you can.
God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in times of trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth is transformed and the mountains are toppled into the depths of the seas, though their waters roar and foam and the mountains quake in the surge. Selah
Psalm 46:1-3 (BSB)
Then Nehemiah told them, “Go and eat what is rich, drink what is sweet, and send out portions to those who have nothing prepared, since today is holy to our Lord. Do not grieve, for the joy of the Lord is your strength.”
Nehemiah 8:10 (BSB)
The Lord is my strength and my shield; my heart trusts in Him, and I am helped. Therefore my heart rejoices, and I give thanks to Him with my song.
Psalm 28:7 (BSB)
The Lord is my rock, my fortress, and my deliverer. My God is my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.
Psalm 18:2 (BSB)
GOD the Lord is my strength; He makes my feet like those of a deer; He makes me walk upon the heights! For the choirmaster. With stringed instruments.
Habakkuk 3:19 (BSB)
Courage to stand firm
Sometimes strength means holding your ground rather than charging ahead. These verses speak of courage that comes from knowing who stands with you. Fear may still be there, but it does not get the final word.
Have I not commanded you to be strong and courageous? Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”
Joshua 1:9 (BSB)
Finally, be strong in the Lord and in His mighty power. Put on the full armor of God, so that you can make your stand against the devil’s schemes.
Ephesians 6:10-11 (BSB)
Be on the alert. Stand firm in the faith. Be men of courage. Be strong.
1 Corinthians 16:13 (BSB)
For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and self-control.
2 Timothy 1:7 (BSB)
The Lord is my light and my salvation - whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life - whom shall I dread?
Psalm 27:1 (BSB)
A prayer
God, I come to you without much strength left. You know what I am carrying and how tired I am. Be my rock today, somewhere solid when everything else feels like it is shifting. Where I am weak, let your strength show up. Give me courage for the next step, not the whole road. Thank you that I do not have to be strong on my own, because you are with me. Amen.
Questions people ask
What is the best Bible verse for strength?
Isaiah 41:10 is one of the most loved, because God promises to strengthen, help and uphold his people. Philippians 4:13 and Isaiah 40:31 are also widely read. Each speaks to a slightly different need: courage, endurance or renewal, so it helps to choose the one that fits your day.
What does Philippians 4:13 really mean?
Paul wrote Philippians 4:13 while in prison, right after saying he had learned to be content whether he had plenty or very little. In context it is less about achieving anything we set our minds to and more about being able to endure any circumstance, good or hard, through the strength Christ gives.
What does the Bible say about strength in weakness?
In 2 Corinthians 12:9-10 Paul describes asking God to take away a painful struggle. God's answer was that his grace was enough and that his power is made perfect in weakness. Paul came to see his weak moments as the places where God's strength was most clearly at work.
