Bible Verses About Hope

The Bible presents hope as confident trust in God's faithfulness, not wishful thinking. Romans 15:13 calls God the God of hope who fills us with joy and peace, Lamentations 3:21-24 finds hope in God's mercy, fresh each new day, and Hebrews 6:19 calls hope an anchor for the soul.

Biblical hope is often found in the hardest places. Lamentations was written over a ruined city, and Paul wrote about hope from prison. These verses are for anyone who needs a reason to keep looking forward.

Hope that rests in God

The psalmists often talk to their own souls, reminding themselves where their hope comes from. It is a practice worth borrowing. Read these verses as words you can say to yourself on a heavy day.

Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you believe in Him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.

Romans 15:13 (BSB)

Why are you downcast, O my soul? Why the unease within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise Him, my Savior and my God.

Psalm 42:11 (BSB)

Rest in God alone, O my soul, for my hope comes from Him.

Psalm 62:5 (BSB)

Yet I call this to mind, and therefore I have hope: Because of the loving devotion of the Lord we are not consumed, for His mercies never fail. They are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness! “The Lord is my portion,” says my soul, “therefore I will hope in Him.”

Lamentations 3:21-24 (BSB)

I wait for the Lord; my soul does wait, and in His word I put my hope.

Psalm 130:5 (BSB)

Hope when things are hard

Scripture does not promise hope instead of suffering. It says hope can grow right in the middle of it. These verses hold steady when the circumstances do not.

Not only that, but we also rejoice in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope. And hope does not disappoint us, because God has poured out His love into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, whom He has given us.

Romans 5:3-5 (BSB)

For in this hope we were saved; but hope that is seen is no hope at all. Who hopes for what he can already see? But if we hope for what we do not yet see, we wait for it patiently.

Romans 8:24-25 (BSB)

For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, to give you a future and a hope.

Jeremiah 29:11 (BSB)

We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure. It enters the inner sanctuary behind the curtain,

Hebrews 6:19 (BSB)

But as for me, I will look to the Lord; I will wait for the God of my salvation. My God will hear me.

Micah 7:7 (BSB)

A living hope

Christian hope looks beyond this life to what God has promised. Because of the resurrection, Peter calls it a living hope. These verses lift our eyes to the bigger story we belong to.

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! By His great mercy He has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,

1 Peter 1:3 (BSB)

as we await the blessed hope and glorious appearance of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ.

Titus 2:13 (BSB)

Brothers, we do not want you to be uninformed about those who sleep in death, so that you will not grieve like the rest, who are without hope. For since we believe that Jesus died and rose again, we also believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in Him.

1 Thessalonians 4:13-14 (BSB)

Let us hold resolutely to the hope we profess, for He who promised is faithful.

Hebrews 10:23 (BSB)

To them God has chosen to make known among the Gentiles the glorious riches of this mystery, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory.

Colossians 1:27 (BSB)

A prayer

God of hope, some days I struggle to see past what is in front of me. Lift my eyes. Remind me that your mercy is fresh again this morning and that you have not forgotten me. Anchor my soul when everything feels unsteady. Fill me with your joy and peace as I trust you, so that hope overflows in me and reaches the people around me. Amen.

Questions people ask

What is the difference between hope and wishing in the Bible?

Wishing is wanting something without any guarantee. Biblical hope rests on the character of God and the promises he has already kept. That is why Hebrews 6:19 calls it an anchor for the soul. It is confident expectation, not crossed fingers, even when the outcome is not yet visible.

What is the best Bible verse about hope?

Romans 15:13 is a favourite, a blessing that asks the God of hope to fill believers with joy and peace. Jeremiah 29:11 and Lamentations 3:22-23 are also widely loved. Each comes from a hard season, which is part of why they ring true for people who are struggling.

What is a living hope?

Peter uses the phrase in 1 Peter 1:3, saying God has given believers new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus. It is called living because it rests on a living Saviour, and because it cannot fade or die the way human hopes sometimes do.
