Bible Verses About Anxiety
The Bible speaks to anxiety directly and gently. Philippians 4:6-7 invites us to bring every worry to God in prayer, with thanks, and promises a peace beyond understanding. 1 Peter 5:7 tells us to hand our cares to God because he cares for us, and Matthew 6:34 encourages us to take one day at a time.
Anxiety is not a sign that your faith is weak. The psalms are full of people whose minds raced and whose nights were long, and they brought all of it to God. These verses are for the moments when worry feels louder than everything else.

When worry keeps you up
Night is often when anxious thoughts are loudest. These verses invite you to put the worries down, one by one, into hands bigger than yours. You do not have to solve tomorrow tonight.
Be anxious for nothing, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
Philippians 4:6-7 (BSB)
Cast all your anxiety on Him, because He cares for you.
1 Peter 5:7 (BSB)
Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Today has enough trouble of its own.
Matthew 6:34 (BSB)
I will lie down and sleep in peace, for You alone, O Lord, make me dwell in safety.
Psalm 4:8 (BSB)
When anxiety overwhelms me, Your consolation delights my soul.
Psalm 94:19 (BSB)
When fear takes hold
Fear can arrive without warning and feel overwhelming. The psalmists did not pretend they were never afraid; they told God about it. These verses are honest about fear and steady about God's nearness.
When I am afraid, I put my trust in You.
Psalm 56:3 (BSB)
Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled; do not be afraid.
John 14:27 (BSB)
Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.
Psalm 23:4 (BSB)
I sought the Lord, and He answered me; He delivered me from all my fears.
Psalm 34:4 (BSB)
Handing it over
Jesus spoke tenderly to worried people, pointing them to the birds and flowers God looks after every day. He invited the weary to come to him and rest. These verses are an open invitation to let go of what you were never meant to carry alone.
Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? Look at the birds of the air: They do not sow or reap or gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life?
Matthew 6:25-27 (BSB)
Come to Me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.”
Matthew 11:28-30 (BSB)
Cast your burden upon the Lord and He will sustain you; He will never let the righteous be shaken.
Psalm 55:22 (BSB)
Anxiety weighs down the heart of a man, but a good word cheers it up.
Proverbs 12:25 (BSB)
Peace for a busy mind
Peace in scripture is not the absence of trouble, it is God's presence in the middle of it. Jesus was honest that this world brings trouble, and just as clear that he has overcome it. Read these slowly and breathe.
You will keep in perfect peace the steadfast of mind, because he trusts in You.
Isaiah 26:3 (BSB)
Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, for to this you were called as members of one body. And be thankful.
Colossians 3:15 (BSB)
I have told you these things so that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take courage; I have overcome the world!”
John 16:33 (BSB)
“Be still and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted over the earth.”
Psalm 46:10 (BSB)
A prayer
Lord, my mind will not slow down and my heart feels heavy. I bring you every worry I am holding, the big ones and the small ones. I cannot fix them all tonight, so I am placing them in your hands. Quiet the noise inside me. Remind me that you are near and that I am not alone. Give me your peace, even before I understand it, and help me take just the next small step. Amen.
Questions people ask
What is the most powerful Bible verse for anxiety?
Philippians 4:6-7 is the passage most people turn to. It invites us to bring every concern to God in prayer with thanksgiving, and promises a peace that guards our hearts and minds. 1 Peter 5:7 is a close second, a short reminder that we can hand our anxieties to God because he cares for us.
Is anxiety a sin according to the Bible?
Feeling anxious is part of being human, and scripture treats anxious people with compassion rather than condemnation. Jesus himself was deeply troubled in Gethsemane. When the Bible says not to be anxious, it is an invitation to bring our worries to God, not a rebuke for having them.
What did Jesus say about worry?
In Matthew 6:25-34 Jesus pointed to the birds and the wildflowers, which God feeds and clothes, and reminded his listeners how much more they matter to God. He asked who could add a single hour to their life by worrying, and encouraged them to seek God first and take each day as it comes.
