Bible Verses About Comfort

The Bible calls God the God of all comfort. 2 Corinthians 1:3-4 says he comforts us in every trouble so we can comfort others, Psalm 23:4 promises his presence even in the darkest valley, and Matthew 5:4 promises comfort to those who mourn.

Comfort in scripture is rarely a quick fix. It is God drawing close, staying, and holding us steady while we heal. These verses are for any season when life feels heavy and you need to know someone is with you.

The God who comforts

Scripture uses some of its most tender language here, even comparing God to a mother comforting her child. This is not a distant God watching from far away. Let these words land gently.

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves have received from God.

2 Corinthians 1:3-4 (BSB)

As a mother comforts her son, so will I comfort you, and you will be consoled over Jerusalem.”

Isaiah 66:13 (BSB)

Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.

Psalm 23:4 (BSB)

Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.

Matthew 5:4 (BSB)

“Comfort, comfort My people,” says your God.

Isaiah 40:1 (BSB)

Rest for the weary

Sometimes what we need most is simply to stop. These verses picture God as a shelter, a rock and a watchman who never sleeps. You can rest, because he does not.

In God alone my soul finds rest; my salvation comes from Him. He alone is my rock and my salvation. He is my fortress; I will never be shaken.

Psalm 62:1-2 (BSB)

This is my comfort in affliction, that Your promise has given me life.

Psalm 119:50 (BSB)

He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will abide in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say to the Lord, “You are my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.”

Psalm 91:1-2 (BSB)

He will not allow your foot to slip; your Protector will not slumber. Behold, the Protector of Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.

Psalm 121:3-4 (BSB)

You are not alone

Loneliness can make hard times so much harder. Jesus promised his friends he would not leave them as orphans, and that promise still stands. These verses speak of a presence that goes everywhere you go.

The Lord Himself goes before you; He will be with you. He will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid or discouraged.”

Deuteronomy 31:8 (BSB)

And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Advocate to be with you forever - the Spirit of truth. The world cannot receive Him, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him. But you do know Him, for He abides with you and will be in you. I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you.

John 14:16-18 (BSB)

Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, for God has said: “Never will I leave you, never will I forsake you.”

Hebrews 13:5 (BSB)

Where can I go to escape Your Spirit? Where can I flee from Your presence? If I ascend to the heavens, You are there; if I make my bed in Sheol, You are there. If I rise on the wings of the dawn, if I settle by the farthest sea, even there Your hand will guide me; Your right hand will hold me fast.

Psalm 139:7-10 (BSB)

Comfort that lasts

God's comfort is not only for today. These verses look further ahead, to an eternal comfort and a good hope that hard seasons cannot take away. Hold onto them for the long haul.

For everything that was written in the past was written for our instruction, so that through endurance and the encouragement of the Scriptures, we might have hope.

Romans 15:4 (BSB)

Now may our Lord Jesus Christ Himself and God our Father, who by grace has loved us and given us eternal comfort and good hope, encourage your hearts and strengthen you in every good word and deed.

2 Thessalonians 2:16-17 (BSB)

For the Lord will not cast us off forever. Even if He causes grief, He will show compassion according to His abundant loving devotion. For He does not willingly afflict or grieve the sons of men.

Lamentations 3:31-33 (BSB)

A prayer

God of all comfort, I need you close today. You see what is weighing on me, even the parts I cannot put into words. Hold me the way a parent holds a hurting child. Be my shelter when I am tired and my company when I feel alone. Let your comfort settle deep in me, and when I am stronger, help me pass it on to someone else who needs it. Amen.
