Bible Verses About Peace

In the Bible, peace means far more than calm. Romans 5:1-2 says that through Jesus we have peace with God, 2 Thessalonians 3:16 prays for the Lord of peace to give peace at all times and in every way, and Matthew 5:9 calls peacemakers blessed. Peace starts with God and spreads outwards to others.

The Hebrew word shalom means wholeness: everything in its right place, with God, within ourselves and between people. Scripture speaks of all three. These verses explore where peace comes from, how Jesus gives it, and how we can carry it into our homes, workplaces and friendships.

Peace with God

The deepest peace in scripture is not a mood but a restored relationship. The angels announced it at Jesus' birth, and Paul explains that through Christ the distance between us and God has been closed. Every other kind of peace grows from here.

Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we stand. And we rejoice in the hope of the glory of God.

Romans 5:1-2 (BSB)

For God was pleased to have all His fullness dwell in Him, and through Him to reconcile to Himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through the blood of His cross.

Colossians 1:19-20 (BSB)

For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given, and the government will be upon His shoulders. And He will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

Isaiah 9:6 (BSB)

“Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to men on whom His favor rests!”

Luke 2:14 (BSB)

The peace Jesus gives

Jesus calmed a storm with a word, then asked his frightened friends why they were afraid. The night before he died, he promised them a peace the world cannot give. These verses show peace as something given by a person, not achieved by technique.

Now may the Lord of peace Himself give you peace at all times and in every way. The Lord be with all of you.

2 Thessalonians 3:16 (BSB)

Then Jesus got up and rebuked the wind and the sea. “Silence!” He commanded. “Be still!” And the wind died down, and it was perfectly calm. “Why are you so afraid?” He asked. “Do you still have no faith?”

Mark 4:39-40 (BSB)

Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled; do not be afraid.

John 14:27 (BSB)

The Lord gives His people strength; the Lord blesses His people with peace.

Psalm 29:11 (BSB)

Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me, put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you.

Philippians 4:9 (BSB)

A settled heart

Scripture links inner peace with living close to God and close to what is right. A tranquil heart, Proverbs says, is life to the whole person, while envy eats away at us. Isaiah promises a peace that holds even if the mountains themselves are shaken.

The work of righteousness will be peace; the service of righteousness will be quiet confidence forever.

Isaiah 32:17 (BSB)

Abundant peace belongs to those who love Your law; nothing can make them stumble.

Psalm 119:165 (BSB)

A tranquil heart is life to the body, but envy rots the bones.

Proverbs 14:30 (BSB)

I will listen to what God the Lord will say; for He will surely speak peace to His people and His saints; He will not let them return to folly.

Psalm 85:8 (BSB)

Though the mountains may be removed and the hills may be shaken, My loving devotion will not depart from you, and My covenant of peace will not be broken,” says the Lord, who has compassion on you.

Isaiah 54:10 (BSB)

Making peace with others

Peace is not only something we receive, it is something we make. Jesus called peacemakers children of God, and Paul asks us to live at peace with everyone if it is possible on our part. That last phrase is honest: some peace takes two, but we can always do our part.

Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called sons of God.

Matthew 5:9 (BSB)

If it is possible on your part, live at peace with everyone.

Romans 12:18 (BSB)

Pursue peace with everyone, as well as holiness, without which no one will see the Lord.

Hebrews 12:14 (BSB)

But the wisdom from above is first of all pure, then peace-loving, gentle, accommodating, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial, and sincere. Peacemakers who sow in peace reap the fruit of righteousness.

James 3:17-18 (BSB)

Turn away from evil and do good; seek peace and pursue it.

Psalm 34:14 (BSB)

A prayer

Prince of Peace, thank you that through you I am at peace with God. Calm the storms in me today, the racing thoughts and the restless heart. Give me your peace at all times and in every way, not as the world gives but as only you can. Make me a peacemaker at home, at work and in every conversation. Where there is tension between me and someone else, show me my part, and give me courage to take the first step. Amen.

Questions people ask

What is the best Bible verse about peace?

Philippians 4:6-7 and John 14:27 are the best known, promising a peace that guards our hearts and a peace different from anything the world offers. Isaiah 26:3 and 2 Thessalonians 3:16 are also widely loved. Which one helps most often depends on whether you need inner calm or peace with someone else.

What does shalom mean in the Bible?

Shalom is the Hebrew word usually translated peace. It means more than the absence of conflict; it carries the idea of wholeness, wellbeing and things being as they should be. It describes right relationships with God, with others and within ourselves, which is why it is still used as a greeting today.

Why is Jesus called the Prince of Peace?

The title comes from Isaiah 9:6, a prophecy about a child who would be born to rule. Christians see it fulfilled in Jesus, who brings peace between people and God and promises a coming kingdom where peace will have no end. The angels at his birth also announced peace on earth.

What does the Bible say about peacemakers?

In Matthew 5:9 Jesus says peacemakers are blessed and will be called children of God. James 3:17-18 adds that those who sow peace reap a harvest of righteousness. Peacemaking in scripture is active work, not just avoiding conflict, and Romans 12:18 asks us to do our part even when the other person may not.
