Bible Verses About Patience

The Bible treats patience as a fruit of God's Spirit and a reflection of his own character. Galatians 5:22-23 lists patience among the fruit of the Spirit, Psalm 27:14 encourages us to wait for the Lord with courage, and James 5:7-8 compares patient faith to a farmer waiting for the rain.

Patience is tested in two places: with people who frustrate us, and in seasons when nothing seems to move. Scripture speaks to both, and it reminds us that God has been endlessly patient with us. These verses are for the queue, the waiting room and the long wait for an answer.

Patience with people

Proverbs praises the person who is slow to anger, ranking them above a mighty warrior. James adds a simple order: listen first, speak second, get angry last. These verses are worth reading before a difficult conversation, not after.

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Against such things there is no law.

Galatians 5:22-23 (BSB)

A patient man has great understanding, but a quick-tempered man promotes folly.

Proverbs 14:29 (BSB)

He who is slow to anger is better than a warrior, and he who controls his temper is greater than one who captures a city.

Proverbs 16:32 (BSB)

The end of a matter is better than the beginning, and a patient spirit is better than a proud one. Do not be quickly provoked in your spirit, for anger settles in the lap of a fool.

Ecclesiastes 7:8-9 (BSB)

My beloved brothers, understand this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to anger, for man’s anger does not bring about the righteousness that God desires.

James 1:19-20 (BSB)

Waiting on God

Waiting is one of the most repeated themes in the psalms. It is not passive; it is choosing to trust while the answer has not arrived yet. Habakkuk was told that what God had promised might seem slow but would come at the right time.

Wait patiently for the Lord; be strong and courageous. Wait patiently for the Lord!

Psalm 27:14 (BSB)

Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for Him; do not fret when men prosper in their ways, when they carry out wicked schemes.

Psalm 37:7 (BSB)

The Lord is good to those who wait for Him, to the soul who seeks Him. It is good to wait quietly for the salvation of the Lord.

Lamentations 3:25-26 (BSB)

For the vision awaits an appointed time; it testifies of the end and does not lie. Though it lingers, wait for it, since it will surely come and will not delay.

Habakkuk 2:3 (BSB)

Therefore the Lord longs to be gracious to you; therefore He rises to show you compassion, for the Lord is a just God. Blessed are all who wait for Him.

Isaiah 30:18 (BSB)

Patience in hard seasons

Some seasons ask us to endure rather than fix. James points to the farmer who plants, then waits for the autumn and spring rains. Endurance here is not gritting your teeth alone; it is strength God gives a day at a time.

Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, persistent in prayer.

Romans 12:12 (BSB)

Be patient, then, brothers, until the Lord’s coming. See how the farmer awaits the precious fruit of the soil - how patient he is for the fall and spring rains. You, too, be patient and strengthen your hearts, because the Lord’s coming is near.

James 5:7-8 (BSB)

You need to persevere, so that after you have done the will of God, you will receive what He has promised.

Hebrews 10:36 (BSB)

being strengthened with all power according to His glorious might so that you may have full endurance and patience, and joyfully giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of the saints in the light.

Colossians 1:11-12 (BSB)

God's patience with us

Before scripture asks us to be patient, it shows us a God who is slow to anger and rich in love. Paul called himself the worst of sinners and the clearest example of Christ's patience. The patience we show others starts with the patience we have received.

The Lord is not slow in keeping His promise as some understand slowness, but is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish but everyone to come to repentance.

2 Peter 3:9 (BSB)

But You, O Lord, are a compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in loving devotion and faithfulness.

Psalm 86:15 (BSB)

The Lord is compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, abounding in loving devotion.

Psalm 103:8 (BSB)

But for this very reason I was shown mercy, so that in me, the worst of sinners, Christ Jesus might display His perfect patience as an example to those who would believe in Him for eternal life.

1 Timothy 1:16 (BSB)

A prayer

Patient God, you have been so slow to anger with me and so quick to show kindness. Grow that same patience in me. When people frustrate me, help me listen before I speak. When I am waiting for answers that have not come, help me trust your timing. Give me strength to endure the slow seasons with hope instead of resentment, and let your Spirit grow good fruit in me, even when I cannot see it yet. Amen.

Questions people ask

What does the Bible say about being patient?

Scripture calls patience a fruit of the Spirit in Galatians 5:22-23 and links it closely with love, kindness and self-control. Proverbs praises people who are slow to anger, and the psalms repeatedly encourage waiting on the Lord. Above all, the Bible roots our patience in God's own patience with us.

What is a good Bible verse for waiting on God?

Psalm 27:14 is a favourite, encouraging us to be strong and courageous while we wait for the Lord. Lamentations 3:25-26 says the Lord is good to those who wait for him, and Isaiah 40:31 promises renewed strength to those who wait upon the Lord.

Is patience a fruit of the Spirit?

Yes. Galatians 5:22-23 lists patience alongside love, joy, peace, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Calling it fruit suggests it grows over time as we stay close to God, rather than appearing all at once through willpower.

Why does God make us wait?

Scripture does not give one simple answer, but it offers several threads. Waiting can grow endurance and character, as Romans 5:3-4 and James 1:2-4 describe. 2 Peter 3:9 says God's apparent slowness is often patience, giving people time to turn to him. And the psalms show that it is fine to tell God honestly how hard the waiting is.
