Bible Verses About Marriage
The Bible presents marriage as a lifelong covenant of love, faithfulness and mutual care. Genesis 2:24 describes husband and wife becoming one flesh, Ephesians 5:21 calls both to put each other first out of reverence for Christ, and Colossians 3:12 lists the compassion, kindness and patience that hold a marriage together.
Scripture begins with a wedding of sorts in Eden and ends with a wedding feast in Revelation. In between it speaks honestly about what it takes for two people to build a life together. These verses cover God's design for marriage, serving one another, handling conflict and staying faithful.
God's design for marriage
In Genesis, God looks at the man on his own and says it is not good. Marriage is pictured as a gift, two lives joined so closely they become one. Jesus returned to these same words when he was asked about marriage.
The Lord God also said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make for him a suitable helper.”
Genesis 2:18 (BSB)
For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh.
Genesis 2:24 (BSB)
However, from the beginning of creation, ‘God made them male and female.’ ‘For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh.’ So they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let man not separate.”
Mark 10:6-9 (BSB)

When you disagree
Every marriage has hard conversations. Scripture does not pretend anger never comes; it asks us not to let it settle overnight. A gentle answer, a patient spirit and a willingness to overlook small wrongs can change the whole tone of a home.
with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, and with diligence to preserve the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace.
Ephesians 4:2-3 (BSB)

A prayer
Faithful God, thank you for the gift of marriage and for the person you have given me to share my life with. Teach us to put each other first, to speak gently and to forgive quickly. When we disagree, help us not to let the sun go down on our anger. Guard our love from everything that would pull us apart, and keep us delighting in one another through every season. Be at the centre of our home. Amen.
