Bible Verses About Forgiveness
The Bible teaches that God forgives freely and asks us to forgive others in turn. 1 John 1:9 promises that God will forgive us when we confess, Psalm 103:12 says he removes our sins further than we could ever measure, and Ephesians 4:32 calls us to forgive one another as God forgave us.
Forgiveness runs in two directions in scripture: the mercy we receive from God and the mercy we are asked to show others. Neither is easy, and both take time. These verses are for anyone carrying guilt, or carrying a hurt someone else caused.
God's forgiveness for you
Scripture is clear that God is not reluctant to forgive. He delights in mercy and does not keep a record he plans to bring back up. If you have been holding something you are ashamed of, these verses are for you.
If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
1 John 1:9 (BSB)
As far as the east is from the west, so far has He removed our transgressions from us.
Psalm 103:12 (BSB)
“Come now, let us reason together,” says the Lord. “Though your sins are like scarlet, they will be as white as snow; though they are as red as crimson, they will become like wool.
Isaiah 1:18 (BSB)
Who is a God like You, who pardons iniquity and passes over the transgression of the remnant of His inheritance - who does not retain His anger forever, because He delights in loving devotion? He will again have compassion on us; He will vanquish our iniquities. You will cast out all our sins into the depths of the sea.
Micah 7:18-19 (BSB)
In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of His grace
Ephesians 1:7 (BSB)
Forgiving others
Forgiving someone is not pretending it did not hurt or that trust is instantly restored. It is choosing to release the debt into God's hands. Jesus modelled it even on the cross, and these verses show the way.
Be kind and tenderhearted to one another, forgiving each other just as in Christ God forgave you.
Ephesians 4:32 (BSB)
Bear with one another and forgive any complaint you may have against someone else. Forgive as the Lord forgave you.
Colossians 3:13 (BSB)
For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive yours.
Matthew 6:14-15 (BSB)
Then Peter came to Jesus and asked, “Lord, how many times shall I forgive my brother who sins against me? Up to seven times?” Jesus answered, “I tell you, not just seven times, but seventy-seven times!
Matthew 18:21-22 (BSB)
Then Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.” And they divided up His garments by casting lots.
Luke 23:34 (BSB)
When guilt will not let go
Sometimes the hardest person to forgive is yourself. These verses speak of a clean heart and a fresh start that God gives freely. Your past is real, but it is not the end of your story.
Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.
Romans 8:1 (BSB)
Then I acknowledged my sin to You and did not hide my iniquity. I said, “I will confess my transgressions to the Lord,” and You forgave the guilt of my sin. Selah

Isaiah 43:25 (BSB)
A prayer
Merciful God, thank you that your forgiveness is bigger than anything I have done. I bring you the things I regret and ask you to wash me clean. Help me to believe I am truly forgiven, and to stop carrying what you have already taken away. Give me grace to forgive those who have hurt me, even when it feels impossible. Heal what is broken in me and between us. Amen.
Questions people ask
What does the Bible say about forgiving others?
Jesus taught that forgiveness should be generous and repeated. When Peter asked whether seven times was enough, Jesus answered seventy-seven times (or seventy times seven, depending on the translation), meaning without keeping count. Ephesians 4:32 and Colossians 3:13 ground this in the forgiveness God has already shown us.
Does forgiving someone mean trusting them again?
Not necessarily. Forgiveness means letting go of the right to get even and leaving justice to God. Trust is rebuilt over time and depends on whether the other person has changed. Scripture calls us to forgive, and it also values wisdom, so it is possible to forgive someone while keeping healthy boundaries.
What is the most famous Bible verse about forgiveness?
1 John 1:9 is one of the most quoted, promising that God is faithful to forgive when we confess. Ephesians 4:32 is the best-known verse on forgiving others. Many people also hold onto Luke 23:34, where Jesus asks the Father to forgive the people who crucified him.
